How to accept legal responsibility for a Patient

If you have reviewed the form, you are happy with the information provided & you have completed your verbal handover with the police, you can start the digital Handover process.

  1. One the officer has confirmed that the verbal handover has taken place a banner will appear saying "POLICE HAVE INITIATED A VERBAL HANDOVER".
  2. Click on the box "ACCEPT HANDOVER" 


  1. Review the personal information for the person you are accepting responsibility for, as input by the Police Officer. 
  2. If the persons NHS number is known add the NHS number. When happy click “CONFIRM HANDOVER” 

  1. By signing this page, you are accepting formal legal responsibility for the custody of the individual under section 136 and allowing the officer to leave. Handover of the person is not complete until you have signed and completed this handover form and accepted legal responsibility.   
  2. Add Your Name, your Position & Signature using your mouse. Click “ACCEPT LEGAL RESPONSIBILITY”  
  3. You have now successfully accepted formal legal responsibility for this person.  
  4. Click “RETURN TO OVERVIEW”

  1. The handover has now been confirmed and this banner will appear on the overview page. You can now review, complete, and end this incident. The police can now leave.
